To monitor the mosquito population and species, eighty light traps are baited with dry ice from May through September. Within the District, the traps are set out one night per week. All the trapped mosquitoes are counted and identified. Certain species are sent to the Mesa County Health Department for virus testing.

The mosquitoes that are known to transmit the Zika viruses (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) ARE NOT established in the Grand Valley. The Center for Disease Control has issued a travel warning to pregnant women that plan to travel in areas where the Zika Virus is endemic. For more information click here.
