TIRE DISPOSAL PROGRAM

Help Reduce Mosquito Breeding Sites by Removing Abandoned Tires

Abandoned tires can collect standing water and create an ideal environment for mosquitoes to breed.

To help reduce potential mosquito breeding sites and protect public health, the Grand River Mosquito Control District has established a Tire Disposal Program to provide financial assistance to eligible property owners for the proper disposal of abandoned tires.

The program is authorized under GRMCD Resolution No. 2026-04 and is subject to available funding established through the District's annual budget process.

Reimbursement Available for Up to 9 Tires: 

You will be reimbursed 75% of eligible recycling or disposal fees for up to nine tires, plus a one-time $30 transportation fee per calendar year. 

What Types of Tires Qualify?

• Passenger car tires
• SUV tires
• Light truck tires
• Large heavy-equipment tires

Tires must be sufficiently clear of excessive mud, water, vegetation, concrete, and internal debris so facility attendants can safely handle the tires and accurately verify their count or weight.

Properties With More Than 9 Tires

Properties with more than nine tires, or properties requiring bulk tonnage disposal, must submit a mandatory on-site inspection request.

If an active mosquito larval breeding infestation is documented, the District Manager may approve a one-time funding extension for up to 25 standard-size tires on a case-by-case basis.

How to Apply for Reimbursement

Important: You must receive pre-approval before disposing of your tires.

Step 1: Apply for Pre-Approval
     You must apply for pre-approval and be formally approved before disposing of tires. 
Step 2: Approval
     A GRMCD employee will review your application form and conduct an onsite visit to ensure eligibility requirements.
Step 3: Receive Approved Application 
     You will be notified by the District that your application has been approved. 
Step 4: Dispose of Your Tires
     After receiving approval, take the eligible tires to an approved regional waste facility, such as the Mesa County Landfill. Retain your official receipt from the waste facility.  The receipt must detail the specific tire disposal charges.
Step 5: Submit Your Reimbursement Application
    After the tires have been disposed of, submit the District Reimbursement Application along with your official disposal receipt. Your completed reimbursement application must be submitted within 30 days of disposal.

When Will I Receive My Reimbursement Check?

Reimbursement checks will be made out to the applicant’s name and will be mailed to the listed property address on the third week of each month.
